The Australian Department of Home Affairs recently announced changes to skilled migration pathways, introducing the new Skills in Demand (SID) visa and the National Innovation Visa (NIV) to address evolving workforce needs.
Key Updates to the New Skilled Visa Changes 2024
Skills in Demand Visa (SID) – Subclass 482 | National Innovation Visa (NIV) – Subclass 858 |
Replaces: Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, with existing TSS streams closing to new applications soon. | Replaces: Global Talent Visa but remains a Subclass 858 visa. |
Visa Validity: Up to 4 years, with a pathway to permanent residency. | Pathway: Direct permanent residency. |
Streams: Three streams available: – Specialist Skills: For high earners (min. $135,000) in most occupations (excludes trades, machinery operators, drivers, and laborers). – Core Skills: For skilled employees with a new occupation list and income threshold. – Labour Agreement: Renamed as Skills in Demand Labour Agreement. | For Exceptional Talent: Open to diverse high-achieving individuals, including: – Researchers and Thought Leaders: Recognized through publications, citations, or awards. – Entrepreneurs: Both established and emerging. – Innovative Investors: Emphasis on quality investments. – Athletes and Creatives: Particularly those representing Australia internationally. |
