Earlier today 27 April 2023 at the National Press Club, the Minister for Home Affairs The Hon Clare O’Neil MP delivered a speech to announce the Albanese Government’s intention to overhaul the migration system. This followed the event in November last year when the former Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Dr Martin Parkinson, along with Professor Joanna Howe and John Azarias were asked to prepare a report on the migration system.
The full media release by the Minister O’Neil can be accessed here.
The main points of the changes would be:
- The Temporary Skill Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) will increase from 01 July 2023, from $53,900 to $70,000.
- Three main ‘pathways’ will be considered for skilled migrants:
- First, for specialised, highly skilled workers who will drive innovation.
- Second, a mainstream temporary skilled pathway.
- Third, for the essential industries.
- Streamlining/simplification of visa types.
- By the end of 2023, all temporary skilled workers will have a pathway to permanent residency.
More information to come once the draft outline of the new Australian Migration Strategy is released for consultation.
