New Skills Assessment Changes for Early Childhood Teachers

Published November 12, 2024

Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) Updates

Starting 7 December 2024, the skills assessment for Early Childhood (Pre-Primary School) Teachers will transfer from the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) to the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA).

Simplified English Requirements for ACECQA Skills Assessment

ACECQA introduces more flexible pathways for meeting English proficiency for Early Childhood (Pre-Primary School) Teachers’ skills assessment:

  • One-Year Study Requirement: Candidates can qualify with one year of tertiary or higher education in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, the UK, or the US (AITSL previously required four years).
  • Alternative Language Tests: For those who haven’t studied in English-speaking countries, ACECQA accepts:
    • IELTS Academic Test: Scores of 7.0 in reading/writing and 8.0 in speaking/listening.
    • ISLPR Teacher-Focused Assessment: Level 4 in all four skills.
  • Professional References: In some cases, ACECQA may accept references from employers in English-speaking countries; contact ACECQA directly for guidance.

Benefits for Graduate Diplomas & Career Changers

This update allows career changers or those with a prior degree to qualify with a one-year Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education, avoiding the former four-year study rule and reducing time to qualification.

High Demand for Early Childhood Teachers

Recent rounds for subclass 189 visas required a minimum score of 75 points, showing strong demand for early childhood educators. The streamlined requirements now offer faster, more accessible pathways for prospective teachers to meet this need.

Increased Application Fee

The assessment application fee has increased slightly to AUD 1,100. However, reduced requirements and simplified processes may offset this cost for many applicants.

Faster Path to Employment

With the simplified requirements, aspiring early childhood educators can enter the workforce sooner, helping Australia meet its demand for qualified professionals in this sector.
