Sponsored Parent Visa Subclass 870
Sponsored Parent Visa 870 is a temporary visa, to allow parents of an Australian citizen or permanent resident to come to Australia and stay for up to 3 or 5 years. This visa can be renewed; however, the maximum period of stay is 10 years.
The applicant needs to be sponsored by their Australian child(ren).
Visa 870 Eligibility
Among other requirements, to be eligible for the 870 visa you must be:
- the biological, step or legal parent (such as an adoptive parent), or parent-in-law of the sponsor,
- the sponsor must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
There is no age limitation for the 870 visa, nor the balance of family test like other parent visas
Subclass 870 Visa Sponsorship Requirements
Before the visa applicant can submit their subclass 870 visa, the child must first be approved as a sponsor. If the sponsorship is refused, the parent will not be able to apply for a sponsored parent visa.
The requirements for the sponsor are, for instance:
- Not prevented by any sponsorship limitation, such as if he/she has previously sponsored other parents on subclass 870 visa
- If the sponsor is not an Australian citizen, the sponsor must satisfy residence requirements (that is, he/she must have been living in Australia for at least 4 years)
- Pass the income test. There is a minimum income requirement to become a sponsor which is $83,454.80. The income can be combined between a sponsor and his/her partner.
- Pass the character requirements. This can be done by providing relevant police check(s)
- Owes no debt to the Australian Government or has a public health debt place.
There is a one-off fee charged by the Department to lodge the sponsorship application, of approximately AUD420. This fee may change from time to time.
